Parish Nursing

The Parish Nurse Program, initiated in 1992, placed specially trained registered nurses in churches throughout the community. The first program of its kind in Northeast Ohio, the Parish Nurse Program is a specialized ministry developed to meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of the individual through a wholistic approach.
The development of this program demonstrated our hospital’s commitment to our community in a unique way. Some asked, “What will a church do with a nurse on staff?” A few brave churches jumped on board and the program began with four churches and two nurses. There was some convincing of churches in those early years, but then word got around! We soon found ourselves having a difficult time keeping up with requests for a parish nurse. Thousands of individuals have benefited from the “whole person care” a parish nurse delivers. In May 2007 we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Parish Nurse Program
2008 was another milestone year for the Parish Nurse Program. The changing needs of the community initiated the expansion of the quality primary model of a nurse employed by the hospital to include the church employed and the volunteer model of parish nurse ministry. Sixteen congregations have chosen to transition with their nurse to a church employed model to insure the sustainability of the Parish Nurse Program. A wonderful testimony to the ministry of care provided by the nurses and congregations! The hospitals support continues to provide networking, education, infrastructure and professional resources to all models and congregations participating in the parish nurse partnership.
In each model the parish nurses are experienced registered nurses who are committed to the healing mission of the church and hospitals. They work within the parish, tailoring the program to meet the needs of the individual and congregation. In every faith community the nurse will be available to serve as:
• Health Counselor
• Health Resource Person
• Health Educator
• Health Support Facilitator
• Interpreter of the Relationship Between Faith and Health
We hope that as you peruse our webpage you will see the reflection of our mission and roles in action.
