Our ambulatory care experience is achieved through multiple elective rotations, emergency room, and through the continuity clinic. This experience counts a minimum of 33% of the residents’ training. The continuity clinic is completely achieved through residents attending half a day per week in a private office belonging to one of the teaching faculty. These offices are located on the west side of Cleveland. The number of patients and responsibility of residents gradually advance throughout the three years of training. The attending physician will make all effort to have the same patients be seen by the resident for their follow-up appointments to maintain a continuity of care. The attending physician also will establish a mechanism where the resident can review the patients’ results.
The residents will discuss with their preceptor, each patient, both new and old, whom they see in the ambulatory clinic and should feel free to have the preceptor confirm any uncertain physical findings. The preceptor will review historical information and/or physical examination findings with the resident and the patient. The attending physician is required to sign on all patients seen by the resident, certifying his concurrence with the plan of diagnostic and therapeutic intervention by the resident. The preceptor is responsible for the supervision of the resident and in completing the resident’s evaluation on a quarterly basis. The preceptors who precept the residents’ activities in the ambulatory clinics are also evaluated by those residents. These evaluation forms are provided by the program.
