How does the program work?
Program nurses are available for more information or physician referrals. Our nurses make sure resources are in place for you. Once your doctor determines which method(s) are best, we coordinate your care with the healthcare team.
During registration, you will be asked your preference regarding the use of blood products in your care. The following options are available:
Conserve:
Patients who wish to avoid blood products if at all possible in their care. If you choose this option, a small blood conservation sticker is placed on your hospital wrist band. A large blood conservation sticker is placed on the front of your medical chart.
Refuse:
Patients who refuse blood products under all circumstances including life threatening situations. If you choose this option, you will asked to sign a release form. A small no blood sticker is placed on your hospital wrist band and a large no blood sticker is placed on the front of your medical chart. A safety mechanism is engaged in the hospital computer system that prevents requests for blood products to be processed.
No Preference:
Patient who do not have a preference regarding the use of blood products in their care.
Please note: not all patients may be candidates for "no blood" care; however, blood management techniques can be utilized on all patients. Please consult with your doctor or health care provider for advice about a specific medical condition and to discuss your treatment options..
