At the Breast Health Center, we offer a number of support groups that are open to any cancer patients, as well as family members and caring friends. Those who attend support groups often find them very helpful. Many participants remark that they help reduce stress and feelings of isolation. Support groups also expand knowledge of the disease and increase feelings of hope. They can help pave the way through the course of the disease.
We host the Look Good…Feel Better program, which addresses the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, self-esteem and self-confidence. Our Caring Continues Support Group for breast cancer patients addresses the unique challenges facing patients after a diagnosis of cancer. Our Circle of Hope Support Group offers ongoing support for cancer survivors and their loved ones.
We also participate in the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program, which is for patients who are facing the possibility or reality of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Patients may request a Reach to Recovery volunteer consult at 440.442.4433. These volunteers are breast cancer survivors.
For patients in need of transportation services, the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center at Fairview Hospital offers round-trip transportation to and from the patient's home to the center at no charge. Patients must qualify for this service and meet certain eligibility requirements.
Pastoral care services are also available to provide spiritual and emotional support to patients and their families. Chaplains assist patients in addressing and coping with their fears and concerns. They can facilitate discussion and decision making on end-of-life issues. Chaplains also work closely with hospice, offering patients and families support and guidance.
Fairview Hospital has also developed an informational video, "Coping with Breast Cancer", featuring breast cancer survivors who have been treated in our program. This video provides detailed, educational information on all aspects of breast cancer treatment. It is available at no charge to anyone interested-just ask a member of our staff for a copy!
