What is the R2 Image Checker?
The R2 Image Checker System is a computer aided detection (CAD) system for breast imaging . It assists the radiologists viewing mammograms. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for mammography screening.
How does it work?
After your screening mammogram films are complete, they are placed into the R2 Image Checker. The R2 Image Checker scans your mammogram films with a laser beam and converts the image into a digital signal. The computer system analyzes the mammograms and can assist in the detection of breast abnormalities.
The radiologist reviews your mammogram films in the usual manner and then reviews the R2 Image Checker scan as an extra step in interpreting your mammogram.
The R2 Image Checker does not alter x-ray films. It does not replace the radiologist, but it does add another set of "eyes" to check for suspicious areas. Studies of the R2 Image Checker have shown that use of the system can improve the radiologist's cancer detection rate.
When do I get the results?
After the radiologist reviews your films, a report will be sent to your doctor. Within 30 days, you will receive a letter in the mail with your mammogram results. The R2 Image Checker results are not separate from the radiologist's report.
