Treatments Offered

The Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center at Fairview Hospital has been awarded the designation of Comprehensive Community Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. To be "comprehensive" means that a cancer center maintains national standards for cancer diagnosis, treatment, research, prevention and education.  We're able to provide patients with a full range of diagnostic and treatment services, including access to therapies that are not available anywhere else on the West Side of Cleveland.

Cancer is a complex group of diseases that require the expertise of many specialists.  Studies have shown that cancer treatment decisions made collaboratively at the time of diagnosis offer patients the best opportunity for recovery.  At Fairview Hospital, the multi-disciplinary team approach is used to maintain quality patient care.  Medical specialists work in concert to develop a comprehensive, individualized care program for each patient through all phases of treatment and recovery.

There are a number of different methods used to treat cancer.  SurgeryRadiation and Chemotherapy are three common forms of cancer treatment.  We also offer a comprehensive gynecologic oncology program.  Your type of cancer, the extent of your disease and your general state of health are all influential factors in determining the most appropriate cancer treatment combination.  The following list contains only some of the treatments available.

Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncology covers an array of diagnostic and therapeutic services for cancers that arise in the breast, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine systems and soft tissues. These practitioners diagnose and treat cancer in the least invasive modes whenever possible and are often able to provide organ-preserving surgical techniques, such as lumpectomy and laparoscopy. They also have been trained to do sophisticated surgeries such as liver and pancreatic resections. Other surgical subspecialties include neurosurgery, otolaryngology (head and neck cancer surgery), thoracic surgery, and urologic surgery, providing advanced methods of treatment of cancers of the brain, digestive system, and the genitourinary tract.

  • Colectomy
  • Lumpectomy
  • Mastectomy
  • Minimally Invasive Mammotome Breast Biopsy System
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping
  • Sterotactic Breast Biopsy
  • Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy

Chemotherapy and Medical Oncology
Chemotherapy uses medication to kill or slow the growth of a tumor.  It is often used in conjunction with other forms of cancer treatment.  Physicians can control how chemotherapy is delivered and canc control your dosage to help minimize side effects that may occur. Our oncologists work with patients to determine the best course of therapy including reviewing possible side effects and benefits of the drug(s) to be used.  They also coordinate and manage care among a group of subspecialty cancer providers, working closely with surgeons and radiation oncologists. Our medical oncologists are board-certified or board-eligible in medical oncology. Services provided by medical oncologists include outpatient chemotherapy and palliative care for symptom control. In addition to offering standard treatments, our medical oncologists are knowledgeable about research and offer the most advanced cooperative large group protocols available.

Gynecologic Oncology
Gynecologic oncology requires extensive training directed at reproductive cancers. Gynecologic oncologists manage cancers of the ovary, endometrium, cervix, external genitalia and other reproductive organs. Treatment success often rests on thorough staging, complete resection, and subsequent coordination of care among surgical and nonsurgical disciplines.
